Sylvania, Ohio City Info

In celebration of the Sylvania Sun/Sylvania Sentinel-Herald/Sylvania Sentinel/Sylvania Suburban/Sylvania Herald's 100th birthday anniversary in Sylvania, Ohio it was decided that it was time to update the book written in 1933 by Maynard Giles Cosgrove, titled "A History Of Sylvania For The First Hundred Years".  This book was published by The Sentinel Publishing Co., and was sold as a souvenir during the Sylvania Centennial Celebration Program held on September 2, 3 & 4, 1933, which was a celebration of the 100th birthday anniversary of Sylvania.  This book has been used by many people since that time as the official story of Sylvania's history.  The Herald Newspapers decided that they would reprint this book in celebration of 100 years of newspapers in Sylvania and attempt to briefly continue the history book of Sylvania where Mr. Cosgrove left off in 1933.

To begin with we will explain Sylvania's 100 years of published newspapers.  In 1899 a gentleman by the name of John Samsey came to Sylvania and moved his newspaper business into one of the downtown buildings and began publishing the Sylvania Sun newspaper.  In 1901 he moved his business to the south side of Monroe Street just east of Main into the building that had just been vacated by the Sylvania Masonic Lodge.  Then in 1905 he constructed the brick building on S. Main Street, today referred to as the "Fenstemacher Building".  It is said that in 1908 Mr. Samsey sold the newspaper business and there were various owners from 1908 until 1912 when it was sold to J.A. Parker.  Mr. Parker constructed the cement block building at 5716 Summit Street for his newspaper business.  There were various owners over the years after Parker sold but all continued to occupy the Summit Street building.  Finally, in the 1980's the newspaper purchased property at 4444 W. Alexis Road and moved their operation.  They are still operating at this location today in 1999.
