The Romans visited the area, establishing Pontes ("bridges") at the town now known as Staines. The completion of the M25 in 1985 improved transport links further. Whilst convenient for London (around 30-50 mins by train from many towns), Surrey has retained large areas of green open spaces due to tight planning controls and the Green Belt.
