Schenectady, New York City Info

In the year 1661, Adrent Vancurler (Corlear) from Nijkirk, Netherlands purchased land from the Mohawk Indians who were represented by Sachems Cantuqou, Aiadane, and Sonareetsie. Van Curler and fourteen of his compatriots established a village called Schenectady, an Iroquois word meaning beyond the pine barrens and surrounded it with a wall fashioned of rough hewn trees.

The Village was the “Gateway to the West” for it was the site through which passed all goods destined for either the hinterlands to the west or Albany and European ports to the east. In the middle of this tiny outpost stood an Iroquois long house to accommodate visiting Indians trading with settlers.

The village thrived until 1690 when it was burned to the ground and most of its residents were killed or captured in what was to be the first of the Colonial Wars which raged throughout the Mohawk Valley in the European struggle for control of the North American continent . With the help of Lawrence, a member of the Iroquois tribe, and neighbors in Albany and Troy, the village rebuilt and a second stockade wall encompassing a larger area was constructed around the village.

Schenectady continued to prosper and in 1776 a third stockade wall expanded the village and remained in place for the next 25 years. During this period Schenectady received its charter and became incorporated as a city.  In 1819 the character of the City changed forever when a fire destroyed the business district near the river. Over 160 buildings were lost in the blaze, a devastating blow to the community. Only a half dozen structures carried insurance making rebuilding a slow process.

Six years later in 1825, The Erie Canal opened and effectively eliminated Schenectady's role in the import / export of goods. The opening of canal isolated the Stockade from the growth being experienced by the rest of the city resulting in the character of the Stockade becoming largely residential.  Heavy industry soon began to dominate Schenectady's economy, first in the locomotive industry with Schenectady Locomotive Works and American Locomotive Company and later in the electrical industry with General Electric.
